In the summer, when the planet's axis tilts toward its sun, the sun's path will pass north of the rings for an observer in the northern hemisphereand so the rings will have little effect. Two planets that always kept the same face to each other, for example, would be distorted by their tides, but that's all.
What creates and sustains their division e. The process that we use for determining the consequences of technology in a fantasy world is the same as that used for a science fiction world.
The whole planet will have the same season at the same time. It gives the sense of the breadth of a world— interesting planets will be as multifarious and varied as is the Earth—and fills in background for you almost automatically. In The Stars are Legion, I focused on describing what my characters were doing and what was driving their stories instead of relying on long expository descriptions about their surroundings.
But the essentials that go into making a vibrant, living world are the same regardless of your genre interest. In fact, really close-in satellites are limited by irregularities in the planet itself. Create cultures with their own speech patterns, dress codes and belief systems. The shepherds and rings are particular examples of resonance. The changes have been slow over most of geologic time; it seems that even four billion years ago, only six hundred million years after the Earth and the Solar System formed, the Moon was already half as far away as it is now and thus looked twice as big in the sky; see pageand the day was about ten hours long.
When it comes to habitable globes, we are dealing with the same planet-forming processes that created Earth. Do they have high standards.
Even the largest space colony will not give the sense of wideopen spaces you get on a planet. What this book doesn't cover is life itself. Be clear about how work is going to be divided. Keep in mind that your invocation of place is ultimately to serve the characters and story within it.
Pulling such material out of standard references can be a challenge, especially if you want to get on with telling the story. I like to think of society as being divided up into groups whose primary but not exclusive concerns are: With a calculator you have to reenter all the numbers even if just one is wrong.
It's also a source of details. Tidal evolution of orbits means, though, that catastrophic changes can come very late in a planetary system's history. The fan awards were initially conceived as separate from the Hugo Awards, with the award for Best Fanzine losing its status, but were instead absorbed into the regular Hugo Awards by the convention committee.
Its fantastical nature cannot be used as an excuse for lapses in continuity. A well-known example is sci-fi author Philip K. Still, if the effort is there, it lends a coherence and substance to a story that can never hurt.

What your characters find strange—or normal—will tell you a lot about the world around them. Consider the havoc in a satellite system, for example, if orbit paths begin to cross as a result of secular changes.
The system is, in general, chaotic in the dynamical sense. Both these differences become important over geologic time because they affect the long-term stability of planetary orbits.

World-building is so much more than just a framing device. It’s the very essence of any good fantasy or science fiction story, and the basis of a sense of place in other genres.
